Healthy Fuel for your Kids Snacks or Cold Lunches

The debate, or rather she hoped it was a debate, started when I told my daughter she would be having cold lunches this year with the option of hot lunch from the school only once per week. There was no real debate because even though the kids know how to vote, the rule is I am boss and while I take in their opinions, I do have the final ruling or decision to make.

I recently tested out Dole Real Fruit Bites and they were so delicious and nutritious, which means the kids will surely have some of those during school snack and lunch time this year! The reason for my love of Dole Real Fruit Bites is that they combine my favorites together fruit, yogurt and whole grain oats for a real tasty treat! With most packs being 90 calories, they are not only delicious but nutritious!

A recent study showed that 73% of parents (Wakefield Research for Dole Real Fruit Bites) snack on their kids snacks, why? Because it’s quick and easy. Think about soccer nights? I Know those are the nights I would be more likely to grab a bite of my kids treats without a second thought because they are crazy busy evenings!

Here are some lunch packing ideas for your cold lunch kids that are quick, easy and nutritious -

  • Add instant rice to leftover chicken or transform leftover steak into a hearty chili
  • Cut sandwiches into different shapes with cookie cutters, or write a note on a napkin
  • Dole Real Fruit Bites are made from real dried fruit, coated with yogurt and sprinkled with toasted whole grain oats – Kids won’t be trading this snack
  • Think outside the thermos, and try freezing a yogurt cup or a juice box
  • Grab snacks for your desk drawer or purse so you can have a quick bite

What are some ways you make cold lunches and snacks easier but healthy for your kids?

Gerber® Graduates® Grabbers™ Squeezable Fruit and Fruit and Vegetable Pouches

My sons were able to try a new addition to their lunch and daytime snack routine with Gerber® Graduates® Grabbers™ Squeezable Fruit and Fruit and
Vegetable Pouches
! Take note, my son Aj rarely smiles for a picture and he totally was happy about this new snack idea that he smiled right away holding it up for me to take a pic!

Apparently Aj had seen kids in his class have snacks similar or the same as the Gerber® Graduates® Grabbers™ Squeezable Fruit and Fruit and
Vegetable Pouches this year in Kindergarten. I was excited to hear that he was familiar with the brand and at least the concept of healthy eating!

Five Flavor Combinations

Baby K took a more serious approach, because he is the youngest of three and he knows he better eat that snack up or else someone else is going to get it from him.

I tried all sorts of flavors with the kids, because I received a good sample package. Aj enjoyed having the Gerber® Graduates® Grabbers™ Squeezable Fruit and Fruit and Vegetable Pouches as a special surprise inside of his lunchbox each day when he went to have his snack and lunch time at school. I took pride in knowing that my son was okay with me putting some healthy choices inside of his lunch box each day.

I certainly will be a Mom who buys Gerber® Graduates® Grabbers™ Squeezable Fruit and Fruit and Vegetable Pouches because after the stats I heard last week at an event in NYC, most kids get less than 10% off their servings of veggies and fruits daily, I realized just how little my kids really do get as I don’t eat the recommended amount for myself either. Thank goodness for Gerber for creating a fun, yet healthy & quick idea for snack time!

If you are looking for more information about Gerber please feel free to visit the Gerber website and connect with Gerber on Facebook.

Disclosure: My family received product samples for free. All opinions are truly that of my own.

Teaching Children To Eat Healthy For Life

Guest post by:

I’m a mom, and I know the importance of teaching children to eat healthy right from the start. It seems that once they get a taste of the “bad stuff”, they don’t want anything else. On the other hand, they need to learn to eat and enjoy everything- in moderation. What are some ideas for teaching your children to eat healthy?
  1. Offer children tasty fruits and vegetables (emphasis on tasty). There are a lot of delicious foods, so focus on sharing these with your children. If they hate broccoli and bananas, but love peas and strawberries, give them what they love. As long as they are eating healthy foods, don’t go to war with them over the particulars.
  2. Don’t force children to eat anything they hate. This can create an aversion to anything you recommend, or that group of foods. Instead, let them eat what they want, and at a later date try some foods they didn’t like before again. Their tastes change, and as long as you respect this, there is a good chance they will give those foods a shot another time.
  3. Offer healthy snacks. It’s ok to want to munch, and carrot stick and popcorn are great to snack on between meals. Don’t keep chips, sodas, or candy in the house (or within reach), or those may become go-to snacks.
  4. Get your family in the habit of eating three times daily, along with healthy snacks in between, so that your children continue for their lifetime the habits you developed together in their youth. Skipping meals or eating at odd hours will make maintaining a healthy diet difficult in the long run.
  5. Encourage outdoor activity, because no matter how healthy you eat, being sedentary can still lead to packing on the pounds. Give children a rounded education in healthy living, and be a good example. Don’t give them food to comfort them, because they are bored, or to keep them quiet. Instead, encourage them to be more active and to eat only when hungry.

Cheerios: Quality Time While Nourishing the Body and Mind of my Children

Quality time with my children is very important but also just as important is making sure I am nourishing their mind and body while we enjoy this time together. Here at my house I am not big on offering sweets for snacks but we do enjoy a good healthy treat such as Cheerios or similar for snack.  It’s great that my children are still at the ages of 8, 4 and 2 without knowing too much about sugary treats.

One thing my children and I now like to do together is to go outside and enjoy our new backyard watching the animals, going on treasure hunts and leaving little food behind for the birds so we can watch them come while we sit inside enjoying the view from our windows. Quality time is spent teaching the children about the animals we see in our backyard, investigating how many apples were eaten overnight and counting how many various colored leaves we find laying on the ground.

A nice healthy snack, smiles and education through fun play outdoors is nourishing my child’s minds and bodies. Think about it, they are learning new things which nourishes their minds and getting exercise which is very nourishing to their bodies. If you have children that don’t learn in a normal “book” kind of way, hands on exercise and learning outdoors may work best, but remember to bring along a healthy little treat to ensure they also have full tummies.

Like Cheerios on Facebook and learn more about what other Cheerios Blogger Circle bloggers are doing to nourish the minds and bodies of their children.

Disclosure: I am a member of Cheerios Blogger Circle and this post was written based on a question Cheerios asked me “How do you use quality time with your children to ensure the best nourishment for body and mind?” more articles will come in future months.
