One weekend, I was going through some of my things and found my old GeoMate Jr, and then it happened. The find of my GeoMate Jr, that makes GeoCaching fun for younger kids by showing steps instead of measured distance in miles or feet. It was a Sunday and all of a sudden something happened; the geocaching plan started to hatch. My daughter found her app that allows her to see where caches are all over our area and the kids started to make and find treasures we could place in the caches that we found.
The family was dressed and ready to go within moments, we got our plan ready and it was time to head out into the woods.
I always love being out in the woods with my kids, while the boys tend to be a little bit full of complaints of legs hurting and it taking forever, they really do have some awesome moments of pure happiness when we go out an do things. The first cache was found completely on accident, we all were losing our esteem, getting sort of frustrated about not finding this small cache, but then it happened …
My youngest was looking in the stonewall, where we all were totally convinced the cache was located but others had moved on and hoped to find it elsewhere, when he said, “Mama I see a screwdriver. Can I get it?” I let him grab it, only to find out that it was the geocache! He was so stinking excited, because once he picked it up, he really thought it was a bullet casing or something weird, but it was a cute little surprise!
We moved on and eventually found a second cache, but then it was time to get out of the woods, I needed to get back to the van and it was time to get home for some dinner on this fine Sunday evening. The second cache we found actually had a little light up flashlight that my youngest kept as his own!
Tips on Geocaching with Family
- Bring small treasures to replace anything you take out of the cache.
- Place the geocache container back exactly where you found it.
- Look online for GeoCaching locations near you, before leaving on the adventure and make a map with your family on where you will venture.
- Bring a pen or pencil so you can sign the log in each geocache found.
This really is a fun way to get out and have some treasure hunting fun with the family! I think it is fun for all ages, and once you find that first cache? You just want to keep going to find your next geocache that is mapped out for your family adventure!
I have heard of geocaching! I would love to start this with my boys. My little is finally big enough to start hiking and getting him out without worrying he’s gonna run off. I love this!!
We have went a few times and really loved it. So much fun and great exercise
I’ve heard so much about geocaching but I’ve never tried it personally. I have a friend who does it with her daughter. I’ll definitely be looking into it more.
