School started on August 26th, it was a bittersweet day for me. I was excited to be able to work 5 hour days from home again, but also going to miss all four of the kids after our terrific Summer together. Then on day two I was bringing the boys into their school and K-man just lost it. He spent about six days of being in tears at every drop off. It killed me. I had to be strong, swift yet loving with drop off to school as a means to keep hope that he would stop having such anxiety with me leaving him at school. He is in his second year of all day school, so whatever has brought this response on isn’t something I can pinpoint and the only response he is giving to me is that his “days are too long”.
Finally, about day six of me dropping the kids to school, K-man stopped crying. He now smiles with an I Love You sign as I walk down the hall goodbye. I can tell he is still a bit anxious to be away and he told me yesterday that he is going to miss me all day. I assure him I miss him too but I am always there on time for him after school. He has nothing to fear, Mama is always here for him. I am so proud that it took so little of time to get him to finally be okay with drop off. Now I am just working on getting him okay with getting in the line to go in with his classmates, as he used to be fine with that too. Now, because Aj is special needs, I walk him to his class so K-man prefers to come along and I drop him on my way out the door too. Each day I will continue to work on getting one or both boys to get into their line when the whistle blows so they can walk in with classmates, but for now they are allowed to be walked to class.
One of the most exciting parts of this school year was that I could afford to purchase a cool Bento style lunchbox for the boys school lunches, shown above is this really neat Itzy Ritzy Lunch Happened Bento Lunch Box, Rock Star I use for packing up school lunches for the boys. It was something I found and purchased on Amazon.com. I love it, but sadly, the boys are a wee bit rough and have cracked both of them already. I still use them, but not sure they will last my rough boys all year long.
So that’s it, we have survived the first couple of weeks with back to school; we overcame separation anxiety, we got back on track with school just in time for Soccer to start up and we are enjoying our weekends with family fun filled days to take advantage of our only two full days together now that Summer has ended.
Tell me, how has back to school worked out for you and your children?
I’m glad your son feels better about going now. It is hard when you have to leave them and they don’t want to go.
So happy to hear that things are going smoothly! We did ok here, too, thankfully!
We are on the second week of school here. I think it’s finally setting in for my boys that they’ll be in school for a long time before there’s a long break and they aren’t thrilled about that.
we started a day after you. kids are doing great and loving school but this is the first full week we will have and time will tell how it works out. my son’s swim team doesn’t start until next week and that will also change things.
So glad the routine is improving. The Bento boxes are great for kids.
We’re getting back into routines the past few weeks – and that includes preparing our lunches at night. I’ve picked out several new bento boxes for my son, and I’ve had more fun making his lunch (and he loves eating what I prepare!)
Kiddo is only a week in and so far, so good! We had a bit of a hiccup on where she was going to live (here with her dad or there with her mom) and the schools had to shuffle some paperwork so she missed her first day.
We just started using a Bento box for my son for lunch today. Trying to give him more options than just PB&J and quesadillas!
Back to school has been rough here at my house, but we are making it. It’s hard to get back into the routine of going to bed early and waking up early. Plus, I have to wake the baby when it’s time to take the kids to school, and you know what they say about having to wake a sleeping baby?
Back to school is old hat for our family now, but back in the day, it was a little… rough. The first time is always the worst.
Thankfully, my son has always been really great about back to school. I’ve heard some horror stories from other moms, and I’m so grateful to not have had to live through any of those things.
The kids have always been really great for back to school. I’m grateful for that, because I remember what a beast I was. I HATED it.
Back to school has always been one of the easiest transitions for us. It really hasn’t been an issue at all, which I’m grateful for.
I love that lunch box! I homeschool my son, so back to school isn’t too much of a hassle. It’s rough to get back into a bedtime and waking up routine though.
The first week was ROUGH! I think we’re slowly getting into a groove now
It’s been tough getting back to a routine, that’s for certain. The girls are involved in different activities this year and their school workload is also very different. At least now I’m having time to get back to the daily routine and get things accomplished while they are in school.
We just started week 3. It has been a rough one for us!
happy everybody is getting into the routine, the first week can be very stressful.
I’m glad to hear that everybody survived the second week! That bento-like box is cute!
My son has handled back to school well so far. I cried but he did fine.
Getting back into the routine is crucial for back to school. Love bento style lunches! They are so much fun!
Happy to hear its getting better. Routines and Schedules were so messed up here it was a bit of a toughie for my 5 year old… We do a bento box type lunch here too!
Cool lunch box! I hope the change gets a little easier for him, I know how hard it can be for mommy when your kid doesn’t want to go to school.
No kids at our home, but back-to-school still impacts me. The traffic in the morning is exponentially worse!
My kids are in grade 12 and first year college. Back to school was okay this year not nearly as stressful as previous years.
I love this post! So did we. I am ready for next summer break
I love that bento box! We have the same one with a different pattern.
The kids have all finished school. I know the Itzy Bitzy Lunch Happened Bento Box, Rock Star lunch pail would be on everyone’s list if they were kids again. It sounds like everyone is adapting to back to school, and glad you found a job to accommodate your hours.
My daughter love school so it’s going well for her of course. My son dislikes his 3rd grade class because a few bad kids keep making them miss recess. #kidproblems 🙂
I guess I’m way past those school years, but I still like this time of year. I’m glad you all are in a routine already!
My son loves being in kindergarten. He is exhausted though!
Woo hoo for surviving Week 2 of back to school! I love the decorated bento box!
Glad things are working out– yay for routines!
I was worried how my daughter would do this year as she was in Kindergarten last year in Kansas and it was only have day. We moved this summer and she started a new school and of course all day long for 1st grade. She has done great. We do struggle getting up in the morning and wanting to get going but overall she really loves school. Dodged a bullet there! Hopefully your little boy continues to do great. I’m sure he will.
