We are a blended family; we have my three children plus his teen child all living under one roof. The fact that we have two adults and four very unique, individual children in the home means that the topic of college does come up from time to time. As the girls get older, I know that college may be something they wish to pursue upon their graduation dates in 4-5 years.
What Matters To Me About College
As a Mom who thrives to provide my children with the best education possible, working both with the school system and at home, I think having a college with commuter options as well as dorm options would be best. My eight year old son has high functioning autism and when I think about his possible college days, I feel I would prefer to have him be a college commuter. This would allow him to have a the structure he so needs to succeed, a dorm room may bring unexpected changes which could create a stressful environment for him. With my daughters, they suffer from anxiety with new situations and I fear they may be much like I was back in the college days; too anxious to be living away from home, this means that I would want a way to work to ensure they thrive in a dorm room setting or have the ability to commute should that not work.
I expect a college to have opportunities for the children to study abroad, learn about various cultures in addition to getting the education for the degree of their choice.

Adelphi University has a complete program to assist those students with Autism Spectrum Disorder in the whole student from social and academic to executive functioning in a mainstream, NCAA-sports and cultural arts environment. The Bridges to Adelphi program (that fits into each degree’s curriculum) working with the student on vocational testing as well to make sure they are enrolled in the right program that supports their strengths.
It seems Adelphi University has all of the answers to what I expect a college to offer for my four unique children; from my concerns about autism to my other concerns in regards to having a wide range of programs and professors that will guide my children to work towards a degree that suits their strengths.
Preparing Your Child for College
While my four children are still young, the oldest one is heading into high school this next school year. This means we need to start focusing on college options and what her goals may be for her future upon graduation. It is never too early to start thinking about college options for our children as they tend to grow quickly!
Since I have four very different children with four different levels of needs, strengths and desires; I will work with each one on one to ensure their choice to pick a college, such as Adelphi University meets or exceeds their expectations as a young adult and mine as a parent. After reading all of the Frequently Asked Questions on the Adelphi University website, I can say that if my children so chooses this location, I know they would be in an extremely supportive place where they would be encouraged to lead an independent lifestyle along with a degree that best suits them. Those two points; ability to learn to be more independent and work towards a degree that suits their strengths, makes me on board with Adelphi University’s mission and vision!
