“Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win.” – Sun Tzu
Sun Tzu was an ancient Chinese military general, strategist and philosopher from the Zhou Dynasty. Did you know that Sun Tzu wrote a book called The Art of War? Sun Tzu felt that the art of war was of vital importance to the state.
To me, this quote from Sun Tzu can help to push people forward. You see, not every battle in a war is won, most recently I had to go through this battle of fighting for something that I felt was morally correct and was asked upon by a loved one to fight for them. The battle was not won, but through this battle the inner war was won. You see, in standing up for what I believed to be morally correct and worthy of fighting for in the name of a loved one, ended up building inner strength in not only myself but this loved one. A war can be emotional within your own self, a physical encounter or challenge and it can simple be a battle of willpower, it all depends on what you are currently going through. I can honestly say that reading books containing quotes about positive situations, life and moving forward have been a huge part of helping myself move forward as a happier individual, a mother, a sister and a friend.
“We can complain because rose bushes have thorns, or rejoice because thorn bushes have roses.” – Abraham Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln has many quotes that work well in keeping one on track with positive thinking, he was our 16th president of the United States of America. Abraham Lincoln was assassinated, but prior to that had made many strides in change for our country.
I am sure many of you have been faced with that one or more friend(s) who has to always see the negative in their life as well as the world around them. You see this quote reminds us that every beautiful thing does have it’s thorns, meaning even the most positive of people have something about them or in their life that is a challenge for them. There is no 100% beauty in this world nor 100% perfect person, therefore we all have our own thorns, but we more people chose to focus on that inner beauty of others as well as their own self, the world would be a prettier place, don’t you think? For every good person or good quality someone has, there is a not so good quality within them as well, each of us has our own flaws, that is just life. When one can learn to see the good within their own self, they will start to see the good everywhere else as well.
“Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.” ― Dr. Seuss
Dr. Seuss has a wide variety of children’s books that teach fun lessons through storybooks with beautifully fun illustrations and rhymes. Did you know that Dr. Seuss wasn’t a doctor? He pursued a PhD. in English, but never finished it, however he did receive several honorary degrees in his lifetime.
This is a quote that I typed up to have in my daughter’s bedroom on her wall. This quote often reminds me to move on from sad situations, remember life isn’t all sunshine and flowers, there are struggles and you will be faced with many sorrows during your lifetime. Reminding yourself to smile about what happened is much better than sitting around sulking about things that you cannot change nor undo. Each person makes mistakes, everyone will have those “Why did I do that?” moments and that is okay. Smile that you made those mistakes, learn from them and smile knowing that everything in your life happens for a reason.
“Happiness depends upon ourselves.” ― Aristotle
This Greek philosopher, Aristotle, is someone I would have loved to meet. Aristotle was born in Greece and lived from 384 BC to 322 BC. An interestingly fun fact about Aristotle I found is that Aristotle was also a natural historian, recording data and analyzing the sea life around areas such as Lesbos. His observations and interpretations were frequently years ahead of their time.
This quote is great because it is similar to my tagline of my blog, “Happiness is an attitude”. What started me on positive thinking about 3-5 years ago was the simple fact that my happiness is within, not dependent upon outside sources, people nor events. A persons true positive comes from a love of their own self, a deep understanding that no one else can make them feel something they don’t want to feel and that if we are happy within then we are happy outside too.
“Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great.” ― Mark Twain
Mark Twain is simply a pen name for the humorist and author, Samuel Langhorne Clemens. Mark Twain was a wonderful American writer known for his books The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Great American Novel.
This particular quote by Mark Twain is perfect, you see another key to being a positive thinker is to remember that those who try to belittle you for being who you are, for taking the leap into positive thinking; are truly people who do not need to be in your life. Small people with such simple minds will never fully understand the depth of positive thinking. Once you have made the decision to focus all of your energy and inner thoughts on positive thinking, you will become great. Surround yourself with other great people and you, too, will become great!
I love these – especially the Dr. Seuss one!
My husband has “The Art of War,” in his bedside reading table. The Mark Twain quote you ended with is kind of a ‘birds of a feather’ thing, but used in a positive sense (which the other generally is not). I like positive quotes. 🙂
