A mother wakes up to the sound of an alarm clock going beep beep beep at 6:47 in the morning. This mothers eyes try to focus and she covers her ears because the beep beep beep sound is followed by boys downstairs yelling “mama” over and over again. This morning this mother simply doesn’t want to get out of the warmth surrounding her under the covers of her sleep number bed. This mother simply wants to stay in bed one more minute, but duty calls and she slowly climbs out of bed with her bare-feet hitting the cold hardwood floor, she moves to shut off the alarm and work her way down the cold hardwood steps to her sons bedroom.
Opening the door this mother is greeted by hugs and kisses with a chipper “Good morning Mama” coming from her three year old. It is then that this mother finds herself in a happy mood because this one little chipper boy has made her day with the sweet sound of a good morning greeting. Chasing the boys back upstairs she turns on her coffee and starts pouring the Cheerios into bowls asking if the boys wish to have milk with their cereal this morning. The boys eagerly await their cereal and milk at the kitchen table and say a sweet “thank you Mama” when breakfast is served.
Back to the kitchen this mother pours her coffee with Coffee Mate hazelnut creamer and three scoops of sugar and as soon as that hot, sweet tasting coffee hits her taste-buds she finds her senses are now ready, awakened for the hectic day that lies ahead. Dropping her five year old off at school with a hug and a kiss and a sweet “have a fabulous day” she holds hands with her three year old heading back to her van to endure a long day with her hyper young son.
This day was going to be unlike any other, but this mother had no clue what lay ahead. The starter in the van was going to stop working all of a sudden and she was about to spend some of her bill money to replace the starter to ensure she could make it back to pick up her five year old son and nine year old daughter from school later that day. Continuing on in her day, the starter had been fixed and all seemed to be going okay when her youngest decided ginger ale looks better on the floor than in the cup on the dining room table.
The next part of this mothers day involved answering 100 “whys” that her three year old tossed at her, such as “why is the sky blue” or “why do doggies poop on the lawn”, questions only a curious little one may ask. The mother pours her second travel mug sized coffee and snuggles up on the recliner, already exhausted and it’s only noon time. The remainder of the afternoon with her youngest was quite an adventure; being yelled at because she is too big for the swing and going to break this poor child’s swing set, being begged to push this child around on his two wheel bike so he can feel like a big boy and then being covered in mud from the mud puddle infested driveway.
It was finally time to pick up the nine and five year old from school; the three year old happily hops into his booster seat to buckle up and ride to the school where he will run wild and lose all manners while using the bicycle rack as a jungle gym. Then it happens all of the kids get back home with their mother and each one of them rambles on about their day and how wonderful it was. This mom is already beyond exhausted and tries hard to gather up each child’s rambles into full sentences that make sense while they enjoy a nice home cooked dinner. Fighting off children from hurting each other, siblings wanting to love one another but showing their love in a more aggressive nature is what lay ahead until bath time comes along.
Bath time ends, kids are about to be tucked into their beds and this mother drags herself downstairs to tuck the boys into their bedroom, when all of a sudden her boys reach up, give her the biggest hug ever and a huge kiss followed by “I love you Mama, Sweet Dreams, Goodnight”, it is in this moment that all of the days drama and hectic ups and downs don’t matter, it is in this moment that a hug and a kiss conquer all and relax the mother to head to bed with a smile on her face.
Love is an amazing medicine that no one can completely understand unless they have felt it either from a partner in life or a child. Love truly conquers all evil.
