This is a question many come to me with and I can only assume it’s because I am raising three kids working strictly from home. I will never tell you I am rich, I can’t say all my bills are paid up nor can I say I pay all my bills in a timely fashion but what I can tell you is that I am surviving and my family is happy and well taken care of. So many of us are looking for ways to make extra money from home and some of those people are stay at home parents who don’t want to stop being at home but have been faced with a situation that requires them to find a way to make extra income for their household.

Dig deep into your mind and think about what skills you have from work experience to hobbies. You could be great at scrapbooking, love writing, or maybe you have work experience in marketing or administrative skills.

Can your skill be utilized in a virtual setting?

If you have office skills they can certainly be utilized in a virtual setting, think about it a Virtual Assistant position is normally completed strictly from home (like Brandy Ellen’s Business Solutions) and is one of the top 5 home jobs for woman! Scrapbook, being artistic and the skill of being a good writer are also great skills you can put to work from home. Be creative and think about how you would be able to offer your skills from a virtual setting.

What Do You Need to Start?

If you are going to work virtually one thing for certain is that you need to have a website, you can easily setup a website for free using Webs or you can do what I did and create a self hosted WordPress site for your business. A self hosted site will require more start up costs such as hosting fees and domain purchase. I usually say start at a free or the lowest possible up front costs and as your business grows so will your funds to invest into a different website setup.

What Hours Can You Devote to this Business?

Working from home is difficult sometimes because not only do you have to be self motivated but you must also place limits on what is work time and what is family time. If you are a single parent this may be easier to do but if you have a significant other who works all day or night you may have to be sure to discuss with them what will best work for your family and business. Working from home can cause stress if you don’t set boundaries with what is acceptable working hours.

When I decided to become a virtual assistant and to start making income from my blog I just dove right in no questions asked and never looked back. Now I am sitting at home enjoying every waking moment with my children and working while they sleep. I pay my mortgage and my bills to the best of my abilities and I can’t say I am completely stress free but I can say I am very happy that I made the decision to start working from home!
