Events in a young man’s life such as the prom, are not always the most easy to prepare and plan. Most parents think that having the female side tends to mean that this involves all of the tedious tasks for beauty and fashion. Not so with today’s youth. The male preparation leading to the prom can be just as involved…if not more so, yet not always thought of that way.
A basic checklist can include items such as:
- Finding and fitting the perfect tuxedo.
- Accessorizing to the nines (for his personal look) and of course to match his date.
- Reservations and plans for food, flowers and travel for the night.
Of course this is but an example of items to remember and contend with for the prom. Each individual, by adding their own personal touch, has his own list to create and complete. The parent’s role tends to be more reminding them of the simple things to do like open the car door and pull the chair out for dinner. This is not to say that, by and means, this is all that can be involved. There are many more necessities to make it be “an evening to remember”.
The perfect fit for tux, shoes and jewelry accessories can help boost the young man’s confidence allow him to stand out as much as his date for the night. Something as simple as the proper hairstyle or as original as a classic design diamond bracelet for the evening can complete his ensemble according to his and your expectations. The right finishing touches can be just as important to your son’s outfit as it is to his dates.
By the time you the parent are involved the asking for the date and the bar of expectations are already in place. Hopefully this part of the process has brought him out of his comfort zone and opened his thinking to possibilities unending for the date. Never giving thought to your son having such stylish and creative abilities may leave you close minded to things that only his generation or even school may have available. Trends for prom seem to change as often as colors or patterns for prom dresses so tend to rely on their knowledge of what to do or where to go and just be there to support whatever the popular, hip thing to do is for their night.
Hopefully you can help make this night as flawless as possible in your sons high school memories. The prom tends to be a rite of passage to an uncomfortable event in most males lives. Keeping perspective on what really matters and allowing him to keep his personality present may just change prom from uncomfortable to even being fun.
Simple quick fixes to help may be:
- Allowing use of your name or credit for a reservation
- Doing the car detail or filling the tank
- Making suggestions for photo ops. like even where you and your date may have went
In the end when it’s over and only a fleeting memory put your mind at ease knowing you did all you could to help. The prom can be taxing in time and money so you never want it to be a waste or bad afterthought to have later in life. It’s always easy to remember the prom king and queen but it can be just as easy to remember it wasn’t as bad as you thought it would be even if you are looking at it from the day after or from your 10 year class reunion.
