I think when verbal abuse is the norm in our childhood, it diminishes our ability to nurture a healthy self-esteem for many of our adult years. I think that is true even when we have healthy role models in our youth, alongside the negative ones (the negative ones seem to outweigh the positive for some reason). What a pity to tear a child down versus building him/her up. I have never, never understood it (and I’m glad that I don’t).
