Professor Helen Christensen, from the Australian National University, who led a study, said: “Part of the problem is that pregnancy manuals tell women they are likely to experience memory and concentration problems – so women and their partners are primed to attribute any memory lapse to the ‘hard to miss’ physical sign of pregnancy.”

The findings of the study, which was based on 1,241 women aged between 20 and 24, was published in the British Journal of Psychiatry. The tests looked at the women’s mental speed and working memory over a period of four years. The study found that there were no significant changes in the women’s mental agility or memory.
