How to be More Productive at your Computer

With the whole world at your fingertips it can be difficult to stay on target. Whether you’re working at home or in a crowded office, those deadlines aren’t going anywhere and they need to be done. Time to shake off the old habits and make a new years resolution to become a model worker.

This article is going to show you some tips and tricks to help you knuckle down and get work done. While these pieces of advice might seem daunting at first, a few small changes will grow into positive habits and maybe a few compliments from the boss. So don’t be afraid of the time spent in front of your trusty Lenovo laptop – let’s get some work done.

First of all, it might seem obvious but rid yourself of any distractions. This includes those found online such as time-draining social media sites. Don’t worry about blocking the Internet altogether, there are apps such as Focal Filter that will block some of the biggest distractions for a set time limit. Another way to stay focused is one little word that will keep everything away – no. No to any ‘you’ve got to see this’ emails, no to colleagues dragging you away from your desk and no to anything that has nothing to do with your work. Whilst it might sound pessimistic, make “no” your default at work to remain on task. There’s very rarely anything more important than your current task at hand.

If you happen to have multiple tasks that need to be completed then there’s nothing better than the classic to-do list. Don’t mistake this as an old-fashioned scrap of paper, however. AllThings is a strong set of tools that make listing easy to not only edit and complete but to share, allowing groups of people to work away at the same list. This makes it fantastic for collaborations and group leaders. Another idea is to shift your list onto your smartphone to clear up some monitor real estate. Any.Do is a popular choice in this area, automatically prioritizing entries, synchronizing lists over devices and looking stylish while doing it: a hugely intuitive way of keeping you productive.

Lastly, the bane of many workers day is the humble inbox. Five words can cause a huge disaster later on: “I’ll reply to them later”. Simply designate a certain time when you can catch up on your inbox and organize it – perhaps 10 minutes before or after lunch. Be on the lookout for messages that can be quickly replied to but anything bigger save for your designated slot. If you’re using Gmail then there are some powerful tools that can save you a wealth of time, one of which is Toutapp. It has a wealth of features aimed at supercharging your inbox: the ability to track when sent emails are opened and links clicked, reminders to follow up certain messages, quickly-written email templates and more.

Still No Working Personal Computer, Laptop Only

While I love my laptop and am grateful as well as thankful and appreciative that I have it – my personal computer that I use for main working days in the office has been down for a while now. My ex husband, thankfully, is taking the time to figure it out but I am not rushing him because he has other things going on that keep him from putting my PC his first priority. That I completely understand. To be honest with you all, he DID fix it, return it to me and somehow it died. Again. We are pretty sure it may be a power supply because the PC was running through all the tests at his house over a weekends time just fine. BUT he is going to investigate it just to be sure.

In the meantime, I am going crazy here without Microsoft Office on my laptop, I am right now trying to get the setup to work but it keeps timing out. Big surprise. It seems lately everything I try to do ends up working after a ridiculously long process, but I keep plugging away.

This week my time to work was here, I had little for appointments and lots of time but I just couldn’t be as productive without my personal computer. I really am hoping to have it back soon.

Luckily I do use Xmarks for bookmarks, therefore no bookmarks have been lost. I also use the Firefox add-on Password Exporter so all my Passwords are transferred from one PC to the others. The only issue I have at the moment is that lack in access to my server computer that stores all pictures, business files and client data. I cannot get my laptop to connect to it at all.

Right now I am just doing the best I can with what I have … which means work isn’t as productive but it can get done and it will.

This too shall pass. So they tell me.

I am Obssessed with Blinds and Covered Windows

I am a bit OCD about one thing, okay maybe a couple of things, but my biggest OCD moment is ensuring that all of the windows are covered when darkness falls upon the Earth each night. I have always been someone who will tack up a towel or blanket on a window if no curtains or blinds are there because I just do not like the idea that it’s dark out there and light in here.

Chances are that there are only wild life, such as the three deer who frequent my yard, staring into the windows at me, but I don’t care. In my mind all of my windows must be covered because that makes me feel safe and secure. I love that there are so many blind options for windows and blinds tend to be something I would be more apt to purchase over curtains for the main house windows.

The reason I much prefer blinds over curtains is because they are quick and easy to pull up and put down, while curtains are great ways to encourage my curious little one to hang from. Yes, K man loves to hang from curtains and it drives me BONKERS. So each time I can replace a curtain with a blind it leaves me with one less headache or situation with the little one.

Do you prefer blinds or curtains, how about OCD issues, anything that you have to just deal with each day or else it literally drives your mind crazy?
