Moms: Your Exercise Excuses are Over!

During the month of January, if you pull up to your local gym I would bet that the parking lot is packed. There will be a lot of people starting new workout programs to live up to their resolutions, but after a few weeks those people usually stop going.

I found it funny that my best friend called me about to going to the gym with her because she never works out. She joked with me that the only time she got a workout in last year was when she lifted boxes while moving to her new apartment. I can understand it though. Being a mother is a full-time job in addition to having a full-time job. There is so much that needs to be done in a day, I get that, I really do.

But, there are many different exercises and programs that can be done within a few minutes and no gym is needed. As a personal trainer you can imagine all the different excuses I’ve heard about why my fellow moms are unable to workout regularly. I’m not here to make fun of them but I do have solutions to a few excuses to encourage you to get back out there and look and feel your best this year.

Finite Finances

Some of my clients told me they haven’t worked out in years because they couldn’t afford a gym membership or hiring a personal trainer. Again, I understand that, the economy has been down for a while now with unemployment rising and the price of almost everything going up with it. But all of the equipment in the gym and having a personal trainer is really a luxury. You can have a tight, sculpted body with absolutely no equipment at all.

Doing lunges from one side of your room to the other and back again is a great way to strengthen your calves, glutes, hamstring and quads. I guarantee you will feel the burn after doing a couple of these, but fight through it and complete your set. You will have toned legs in no time.

Absolutely tight abs

You know those commercials they show on TV about a new crunch machine or belt you can wear to get a flat stomach in week? Those aren’t true and the products aren’t needed. First off, getting a six pack requires more than crunches. You have to have a balanced diet because if you’re taking in a bunch of fattening foods and then doing crunches, you’re only cancelling out the effects of the workout.

Once you start eating better there are many exercises you can do to tighten your abs that don’t require any additional equipment. Lying on your back with your legs bent so your knees are pointing up and slowly curling your upper body up using your core to raise you up is a perfect drill to build muscle. You can go up higher to target different sections of your stomach to get the six-pack look. Fifteen minutes is all you need to a few sets every other day or so.

Mommy Workout Tips

Being a mother is one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve ever been fortunate enough to have. Watching my son grow and blossom every day, teaching him how to be a man, and seeing pieces of myself emerge in his personality fills me with an indescribable joy, and satisfaction unlike anything I ever could have imagined prior to his birth.

However, there are days when I yearn for the more carefree days of my youth, when I had unfettered freedom to do what I wanted, when I wanted. As a personal trainer, I have always valued the importance of a healthy, active lifestyle, but some days, I’m lucky to get a few stretches in before my day begins. From the time I wake up to the time I crawl into bed, my day is full of work- and family-related responsibilities, leaving little – if any – time for myself.

However, I am starting to figure out tricks to making time for myself. As a single parent, this is especially important, as I need to maintain my health and wellbeing in order to be a better parent to my son. Here are some tricks I have learned for sneaking in fitness:

  • Keep a pair of hand weights easily accessible, and do reps when sitting at your computer, watching television, etc. There are also many simple exercises you can do anytime, anywhere.
  • Buy home gym equipment or exercise videos. You can often find coupons that will make this an affordable option.
  • Find a Mommy and Me exercise class or workout video. This will keep you in shape and teach your child the importance of fitness.
  • Go for walks with your child. This will benefit you both immensely, and create lasting memories.
  • Roughhouse with your child. Studies have shown that roughhousing with your children is beneficial to them, and anything that gets your heart pumping and your muscles moving is beneficial to you, as well.
  • When running errands, park at the back of the lot and walk, and take the stairs whenever possible. If your child’s legs become tired, offer to carry them for a boost to your workout.
  • Crank the music and dance! This will provide a good cardiovascular workout and improve your child’s coordination at the same time.

Being a parent doesn’t have to be a serious or difficult affair. Too many people overthink things and worry too much. If you focus on setting a positive example for your child, you will be able to maintain your autonomy while still being an effective parent, and your children will flourish as a result of your efforts. Making fitness a priority will lower your stress levels, and teach your child to care for their own health, as well, which is one of the most important things you can do for them.

Day 3: My Resting Day EA Sports Active 30 Day Challenge

Today is Day number 3 of my EA Sports Active workout, and I must admit it’s a great day to relax! My butt muscles, my leg muscles and my biceps are truly feeling achy today. I did two low intensity workouts with the EA Sports Active, so to get my body back into exercising slowly, as I have learned it’s not good to over exert your body for you may hurt something.

Today the challenge says for me to take a rest day, because out of the 30 day challenge you get 10 days of rest and 20 days of working out. Your personal trainer truly guides you to success! I have heard so many wonderful stories about Mom’s (and Dad’s) losing weight taking the 30 Day Challenge and I can’t wait to share my success story. Even thinking about having Justin take some pictures of me before so that I can compare with after photos, now that would make this all the more motivating for myself and hopefully others who are trying to reach their fitness goals!

For now I am simply writing everyday to keep myself focused, motivated and on track.
