Shopping for my Tween Daughter

The time has come, that time when your child no longer accepts and adores your clothing selections for her. Yes, I firmly believe it happens to all of us. We all have been at that stage where the clothing choices our parents made for us would make us cringe and argue the fact that we are now too old to have our Mommy or Daddy buy us clothing. I remember being that age and I was a nightmare, I am sure, now I get to relive that stage with my oldest, which is nearing middle school age and is ready to show her true personality through clothing choices.

There are some limits you can place, as the parent, on your tweens or teens clothing choices and here are some that I have placed with my own daughter:

  • Halter tops are unacceptable as they show off too much skin for every day wear outside of the beach or pool.
  • Be appropriate in your choice of graphic tees that spread a message, make sure the messages on graphic tees are age appropriate and school acceptable.
  • Choose a variety of clothing so that you can dress appropriately for the weather.

My daughter’s current obsession is with printed leggings, she just adores leggings with a matching graphic tee shirt on top. I have recently noticed that rue21.com has a wide range of tween and teen clothing options for any picky dresser. There is a LOVE graphic tee that I know my daughter would totally wear, unless I bought it that is. Parenting gets more difficult as you head into the age of teens picking their own clothing, you must ensure that they are allotted their independence to choose high waisted jeans if they so desire but limit their clothing to age appropriate messages and ensure they cover their body fully. My rule is, the less skin showing, the better.

Shopping for tweens or teens really can give one a headache, it’s no easy task, but if you set rules and boundaries from the beginning; yes that means dressing them appropriately when you are the one choosing clothing from day one, then you will find their clothing choices will continue to be appropriate well into their teen years. Support your tween and teen in their individuality and remember; life is far too short to spend it arguing about matching clothes; let your child’s clothing be their artwork.

Would Would Brandy Do if she Had a No Limits Shoe Shopping Spree

Just the other day I was thinking about how I haven’t purchased myself clothing in forever. Occasionally I do receive a gift card to get some clothes and then I spend that on myself, usually shoes. This got me thinking, what would I do if I had a no-limit shopping spree for my favorite wardrobe item … shoes?!

First off, why do I love shoes? Because they always fit just right no matter what. I can get tall shoes to be a tad bit taller and I can get flats that allow me to stay at my 5’6″ level. It’s great to see the new shoe options out there in the world these days, such as the gladiator heels shown below. Aren’t those some pretty nifty, shiny heels? I could see myself wearing this to a blog event, such as coverage for a movie or a special NYC event. Surely I would tower over many people, but my feet would gain some pretty awesome attention.

Gladiator Heels

Maybe on this particular day I wouldn’t want to tower over everyone and have so much attention brought upon myself, so maybe for a special event I would go with the privileged heelless shoes, these wouldn’t bring me as much attention, wouldn’t make me so tall and could share my love of art. I am all about artistic talent and clothing or shoes being a way to express ones self. These magazine print privileged heelless shoes would so fit the role of me expressing my love of art.

Privileged Harting Magazine Print Clear Oxfords

The next shoe style option that is available these days and seems to be getting more and more popular are the wedge boots. Wedge style shoes are actually the first heel-like option I let my daughter wear. I wasn’t quite ready to push the idea of having my tween walk around with heels on, but I wanted to allow her some shoe freedom and so wedge style shoes made sense. There are so many wedge style shoes, I hadn’t a clue. I happened upon the below wedge style boots and fell in love! What would you think if you saw me walking into an event with these babies on?

Pink Wedge Shoes

Well I think out of all three options I shared, the first option is the one I would love to wear on a night out or an event for my business. Either way, I wonder, which shoe you would choose and why?

Do tell me in a comment below; if you could shop for shoes and have an unlimited amount of money to spend; what style would you envision yourself purchasing?

All In Due Time, They Do Sometimes Need You When they Get Bigger #tweens

I am often found sighing in disbelief at how big my daughter is now, she is into those tween years and she no longer thinks the hairstyles I used to do in her hair are cool. Apparently “cute” is no longer the proper term to refer to a hairstyle either. The cuter it is, the worse of an idea it is; at least according to my tween daughter. It amazes me at how fast she has grown, both in height and in intelligence. This girl is beyond her years in comprehension and most times I wonder if she is one of those “old souls” type of people, she really is a spitting image of me on days she wears her contacts. Whenever my daughter speaks, she seems to truly have taken in most of my positive mindset and that makes me so proud to hear and see.

With all of this being said, it seems that no matter how fast our children grow and no matter how much it has saddened me that my idea of those pig tail braids in her long hair are no longer her preference for hairstyles, there comes a day when your child will indeed want or need you again to help. That was us this past week. My daughter finally needed her Mama to assist in her hair obsession ways. Sadly, I think I created a straightened hair monster, but she wanted and needed me to be her assistant in the mornings for before school hair styling time and that my friends warmed my heart up just a bit.

Even in their Older years, Kids Need their Parents Help

So remember, when you think that your kids have outgrown some things that they loved as younger kids, that there may just be a day when they come to you needing you for something else or something similar. Hang on parents, our kids do still need us, even in their older years! Be patient, they will come to you.

What a Sense of Humor: Hello Kitty Diaper Bag

Being a mom does mean that your fashion lifestyle is over. Today’s mom knows how to let her personality shine through and one of the best ways is with her diaper bag. Instead of dragging an unfortunate-looking diaper bag, why not pick something with panache and style? There are so many plain diaper bags in drag colors with no embellishments and then, there are plucky diaper bags that are full of personality in bright colors with amusing embellishments.

Hello Kitty for Mom and Daughter

Some of the cutest bags I’ve seen are decorated with Hello Kitty. A fabulous pink or black Hello Kitty diaper bag might not be the best choice to bring to the office, but the Asian-inspired bags do have a place. These very affordable diaper bags look great with a casual outfit in pink or black, with fabulous shoes and some perfectly fitting denim. Since many moms will carry diaper bags even when their children are toddlers or young preschoolers, their daughters can also carry a cute Hello Kitty handbag, too. My daughter loved carrying a little purse that matched my bigger version and some Hello Kitty diaper bag styles actually have coordinating die cut purses, too.

Adorable Hello Kitty and Her Pop Art Styling

I absolutely love the Hello Kitty that is styled in black with only part of her face showing. Usually, this Hello Kitty has white eyes and whiskers along with a puffy pink bow. I think this version of Hello Kitty is more adult than the full-face white version, because it is more artistic and unexpected. However, Hello Kitty is so visually attractive that any variation of the pop-art cat on any diaper bag will be able to make you smile.

Diaper Bags from the Juicy Couture Design Studio

I do realize that not everyone loves Hello Kitty (although I don’t understand why). Fortunately, there are other fun diaper bags for the moms that want to stand out from the crowd. Juicy Couture designs diaper bags for women who want to look red hot and stylish. Each Juicy Couture diaper bag has some form of the Juicy Couture logo emblazoned on the front and on the handle as well as on the accessories like the changing pad and bottle bag.

Humor and Style for the Enfant de Juicy

Some Juicy Couture diaper bag styles play off of the Juicy Couture logo with a serious sense of humor. It seems like Juicy Couture designers are able to play off of their own sense of self, because who else would embellish a designer diaper bag with words like “Couture Baby” or “Enfant de Juicy.” The brand is known for being a designed for women who are not afraid to be sultry, so it is fun to see a brand place that designation on their baby gear, too.

Sense of Humor for Every Outfit

Where the Hello Kitty bags are really designed for a casual outfit, the Juicy Couture bags can be carried practically anywhere and they go with most styles of clothes. There is nothing that would prevent a mom from carrying a Juicy Couture bag to work, out shopping, on a night out, or on an outing to the park.

Surprising Neutrals with Fabulous Embellishments

Most of the Juicy diaper bags come in neutral colors like black, chocolate brown, as well as soft pink. But, you should also be able to find a great looking Juicy bag in a variety of blues, fuchsia, animal prints, and stripes. Most of the bags that I see have rich quilting or other textile styling. They are often trimmed in leather or suede for an expensive look. They also have decorative hardware and embellishments, too. You should be able to find them with fabulous bows in leather or suede, keys embellished with crystals, as well as attractive zippers on the many pockets.

High Styling on the Inside

What could be better than the outside of a Juicy Couture baby bag? The inside, of course. The designers at Juicy Couture have even embellished the inside of the bags. They often have a coordinating fabrics in bold stripes or solids. The bags are loaded with speciality pockets for bottles, pacis, blankets, wipes, and extra clothes. Many of the bags also come with coordinating and embellished burp cloths, bibs, and changing pads. Your baby will look so couture getting changed on the boldly labeled changing pad, while wearing her fabulous Juicy Couture bib as you wipe her sweet little face with the Juicy Couture burp cloth.

Have Your Cake, Eat It, and Get a Bag, Too

If you have a Juicy Couture fan in your life, you can easily make her next birthday or the first anniversary of giving birth (which I think should be celebrated) by ordering her a cake in the three-dimensional shape of the Juicy Couture bag that she loves the most. Add a few little baby shoe or baby toy cakes. Some cake makers are good at replicating the look of a Juicy Couture baby tote that she might not even be able to tell the difference between a real bag and the cake. If you need to provide the baker with a model, why not buy her a new baby that looks just like the cake she will receive. The cake could even have a few little baby accessories peeking out of the top for added fun.

Discount Boots: The Perfect Footwear for the Fashionable and Practical Woman

Every woman should have a pair of elegant and trusty boots in her closet. Not only do they look great but they also serve a very important purpose – providing comfort and protection to the person wearing them. There are so many gorgeous boot designs that choosing just a couple of pairs can prove to be daunting. Many high-fashion designers rely on boots to elevate the look of their models as they strut in their creations on the runway. Fall collections are rife with boots of all manner of fantastic designs, which is why many women look forward to this season. High heels are sexy and ballet flats are sweet and cute but there is just something about wearing a beautiful pair of boots that makes a woman exude class and sensuality.

Budget-Friendly Chic

Currently, there is a broad spectrum of women’s boots in the market designed by various well-known designers. A pair of designer boots can cost a hefty amount of money, which is not the most ideal expense in this age of economic struggle. Fortunately, discount boots are available to those of us who are on a tight budget but still want to look stylish. A lot of the designs are inspired by designer boots but with minor modifications and less expensive materials. As a result, it is now possible for regular women to mix up their outfits by owning more than one pair of boots.

Stick with the Essentials

As affordable as they are, you don’t need to get a pair of every style of boots. In fact, there are only five investment pieces that you need to cover your entire wardrobe. Naturally, you will need to have a few casual pairs for everyday use such as rider boots and stacked booties. It was Nancy Sinatra who once said that “boots are made for walking” and she was truly on to something. Rider boots and motorcycle boots are favorites among women who are on the go and prefer a more laid-back style and maximum comfort. However, these boots are by no means unflattering as their designs range from rugged to embellished. Knee-high rider boots are also very popular because they can be worn with jeans or a nice summer dress. Standard leather rider boots in black or tan can easily be your go-to footwear when running errands and meeting friends for lunch. On the other hand, dressier rider boots made of other materials like suede or velvet are perfect for evening parties.

Booties have also earned their spot in the essential footwear list mainly for their style and versatility. The more casual stacked bootie often has a wider heel and is ideal for walking around the city. The dressier type of bootie is less comfortable because of its thinner and higher heel, as well as the absence of a slight platform at the front of the shoe. However, dressy booties go very well with sophisticated outfits because they come in bright colors and various embellishments. Stiletto boots are unique in their own way because they can be both casual and dressy. They are considered appropriate work shoes but they can also be worn with an elegant frock at night. Wellington boots are obvious essentials because their main purpose is to protect your feet from harsh weather conditions such as rain or snow. Thankfully, even these utilitarian boots come in feminine designs now so that your toes can stay snug without compromising style.
