My Incredible Daughter – Raising Beauty Inside and Out

My only daughter is also my first born child. I am also the first born child so I know with that role in the family comes a lot of expectations and a leadership type personality, in most sibling cases. I could not be more proud of my daughter, as she grows older she only grows more beautiful inside and out. Some may say I am bragging, but to me, I am not bragging, I am simply sharing how proud I am of my daughter as I do with all three of my children. Being proud of your children and showing them you are proud of them only encourages a deep level of love for their own self. It’s much easier to build up a child than it is to fix an adult they say and I believe it to be true.

My daughter is the first child who I can see if my parenting style and techniques worked or not, not every child will take to the type of upbringing that my child took to, but here are some tips I would like to share to help raise your own child to become self confident and happy:

  • Listen to anything they have to say from day one. Allow their feelings to be important to you, whether you feel the same or not.
  • Have open communication be acceptable across the board between your child and yourself. Allow those risky off the table topics such as sex, drugs, alcohol and boys/girls be an open topic in your household from day one.
  • Teach a sense of self value, do not spoil your child with materialistic items in a way that devalues the true importance in life, human interaction and family unity. Do things with your child from day 1; read books, play board games, etc.
  • Make your child feel important; always be sure that your actions show your child that they are important to you regardless of whether they were naughty or not. Always show love through actions rather; actions speak louder than words!

I have encouraged my daughter to be her own self, to stand up for who she is and to realize true happiness in life is found within. My daughter knows that it doesn’t matter what anyone else, feels or does to cite they may not approve of her, my daughter is happy within herself. This adorable girl, who is 11 years old now, is well beyond her peers in an emotional and comprehension level basis. It amazes me daily how far beyond her years she is in comparison to her peers; remember to encourage innocence to stay as long as possible with your child but also keep door open to the fact that they do grow up. Open communication from day one helps to ensure you know what’s going on with your child at school or other places outside of your home.

Introduce your child to all sorts of activities, crafts, latch hook, reading, writing and instruments or dance lessons, sports etc but do not force them to partake if it doesn’t interest them.  Give your child a say in what activities they really enjoy, there is nothing worse than when I see a child who is on a sports team but his/her heart isn’t into the game. The act of forcing a child to live through your dreams you had or never had is not the best way to encourage independent thinkers. Remember, these children will grow up to be adults and parents one day too, teach them compassion, love and common sense above all, make sure they have confidence to stand up to you. Yes. I said it. Teach your child to stand up for what they feel is right vs wrong, even when it applies to you as a parent.

The area I am currently working on with my daughter is to ensure she is speaking her mind and speaking up for what she feels is right versus wrong without getting that tween attitude involved in it. This is a time of hormone changes and sometimes they do take over, after all she is female, that is part of our world. I work hard now to remind my daughter that it is acceptable to speak up to her elders for what she feels is right but she must always speak up in a polite respectful way. So far, she is doing a pretty good job with an occasional hiccup where she will say “Mama I know I sort of showed attitude but I tried not to. It’s just that I was so frustrated.” That is half the battle there with any human being, teaching them to admit their own faults and work on them to be a better person every single day of their life.

I am proud of my daughter, who by the way, just received High Honor Roll both 1st and 2nd quarter this year! Raise ‘em right and you will have a long lasting relationship with your child, well into their adult years.

There Were There and Now They Are Gone

Baby robin birds that is …. we looked and saw a nest full of little baby robin birds one day and three days later they were still there. Growing faster than I thought birds did. Then one day we went to check on them and there was no sign of any baby birds in the nest…

I don’t know if the hawk who has been circling got these babies so close to the house or if they learned how to fly and ventured off with their parents but there is no longer any baby birds in this nest for it’s sitting there empty inside of our lilac bush.

Original Cheerios and Thinking Spring

Is Winter over yet? The time is coming when flowers will start blooming and rain begins to fall, this is called Spring time and is one of my favorite times of year. The kids and I will get out our creative ideas and enjoy the non-rainy days.

I have no idea what to do with Original Cheerios and seasonal ingredients this spring but that is what I am to write about today as part of the Cheerios Blogger Circle.

I sat and contemplated, what would this mom do with three children ages 8, 4 and 2 with Original Cheerios this Spring? Then it hit me, feed the birds while feeding ourselves?

How about this, we take one box of Cheerios…

Then we take some of my embroidery floss that is used to make friendship bracelets. Whatever shall we do with embroidery floss and Cheerios to feed the birds and feed the kids?

I plan to make strings of Cheerios to hang from our bird feeder, the birds must love Cheerios as much as the kids love them and this would be a great Spring afternoon activity.

String Cheerios onto embroidery floss, assisting the children while we munch on the Cheerios and when each string is done we gently hang it on the perch of our bird feeder. Next the kids and I will sit down at the picnic table with a bowl full of Cheerios and make Cheerio necklaces, much like candy necklaces but oh so much more healthy!

The kids will have laughter, and cheers when the birds come to sneak a bite of the Cheerio necklaces and I will be one proud Mama for sharing nature and healthy food with my children.

So what would you do if given Original Cheerios in springtime and the option to use seasonal ingredients to create a spring time moment with your children?

That Time of Year is Here {outdoor family time}

I am so excited that that time of year is here, when you wake up and hear the birds chirping outside your house window, where the sun is shining and it just boosts your mind! I love the warm weather and with it comes loving spending time outside with the kids. I am a huge fan of outdoor play time, swimming time or whatever I even love camping but have yet to take all three kids since I don’t have a good camper or tent for us to all use together at the moment.

Outdoor play is very important as a family because the sun boosts your happiness, the exercise increases you happiness and spending time as a family just laughing and being silly is great as well! I don’t have enough backyard activities for my oldest who is 7 and so I hope this year that will change. Even my almost four year old doesn’t really have as many toys for his age since he sort of outgrew them since last year. Baby K is loving the backyard this year though, sliding on his slide, running from car to car and chasing his brother and sissy. Baby K especially loves climbing this big tower we have in the back yard that¬† has a pretend rock stairs up to a tower with a wheel attached to pretend you are driving and then a HUGE slide to go down. He flies on that slide so fast that he literally does a flip when he gets to the end! The problem with this wonderful tower is that it’s too tall for me to be comfortable allowing him up there without supervision within arms reach of him which means I get “guard duty” instead of run and play duty most of the time.

I mowed my lawn on Saturday, which I wrote about last night and so now our backyard looks so nice you can’t resist going back there and enjoying some family time. Some items I really want for my backyard are an enclosed area to sit in to have lunch, dinners or snack in the backyard, a picnic table for adults (have 2 for kids), a swing-set added to our wooden tower, a blow up pool of some sort, and some toys for my sweet AJ and Princess Ki so they can enjoy the outdoors as well.

Here’s hoping this year we get to enjoy our family time outside and maybe even a meal or two!

Questions for thought: Does warm weather and sunshine make you get up and out with the kids? What do you do for fun outdoor family time?

Happy Friday

It’s Friday, the sun is shining outside and all I can think of is Spring is near. I love the idea of lilac’s being in bloom, they are my favorite in the whole wide world. I love the idea of being able to clean up my yard and maybe having a garden this year. I doubt I will ever get the garden idea going, but hey it’s just a thought!

I love the idea of being able to take 2 hour walks everyday and not freeze my butt off. I am excited about the chirping of the birds first thing in the morning. Those morning doves that sound like they are saying “who cooks for who” .¬† Really Spring is near and I can’t wait!

Fall is my favorite season by far, but Spring will do because I am ready for the snow to be melted away and ready for that mud if I have to deal with it to be warm & feel the sun shining in my face! This weekend I have no children and I am not sure what I will do but if it’s nice out you can bet you will find me cleaning like crazy and if I can opening some windows, oh yeah I am ready, are you?
