Divorce Could Create Financial Hardships … at First

Everyone has bad days, even months, but nothing hits you harder than a life event, such as divorce, that leaves you financially jaw dropped. Divorce happens very often these days, so it’s a life event that many can relate to, I’m sure. I was divorced in 2010, with that came a change in household income. I was no longer the work from home Mom who added income to the household’s main form of income; I was it. I became the sole financial supplier in the home. It was very difficult to get used to managing money that I had coming in net 30, 60 and sometimes 120 days to feed and support my three children.

It took me quite some time to find tools and resources that would assist me in successfully working from home while raising my three children and keeping food on the table as well as a roof over our heads. Finally, I found a system that worked well for me; an Excel budget template. A friend of mine had this Excel spreadsheet all set up with formulas and she shared it with me as a means to get me back on track financially after my divorce. The budget template lays out what I need to save weekly in order to keep things afloat financially. This was a true blessing, but what I also found was that there are resources outside of just word-of-mouth from friends, such as SunTrust’s website where they have a wide range of tools & resources at your disposal.

What I love most about SunTrust is that their website has tips to help you keep your budget on track as well as tips on saving money for goals later. Saving money is extremely important, especially when I was found living on one income. I had to learn to save every little bit I could as a means to attempt to accumulate emergency money. We all know that having kids means there are unexpected expenditures that arise, being a single Mom back then, made savings all that more vital to our financial survival.

Three Tips That Worked for me to Gain Financial Success –

  1. Do not fall for “deals” - if you didn’t need the item in the first place, no deal is worth spending your money on.
  2. Stick with your Budget - work to create a budget sheet, print it out and never, ever allow temptations to steer you away from your budget.
  3. Lock cash Up – if you have to lock your weekly allotted budget amount for bills in a firesafe lock box, do it!

Those top three tips are what assisted me in overcoming the financial hardships that divorce created for me back in 2010. I still stick true to my budget this day and have started to be able to save some money too! It’s a wonderful feeling knowing that you are capable of rising above any financial hardship life event if you just stick to budget and keep moving forward.

At SunTrust Bank their purpose is lighting the way to financial well being. They help you get organized, make a plan, and stay on track so you can get and stay in control of your finances. When you are confident about about your money, you can save for your goals and splurge knowingly on waht matters most to you.

A Great Hand Out Idea for Halloween – College Savings Registry @GradSave #halloween

Have you ever created a baby registry?

How about a registry for a wedding or maybe your child’s birthday?

GradSave is about the same concept, you create a college savings registry by going to GradSave.com and connect a 529 Plan or prepaid college savings plan to your GradSave account. Once you have your GradSave account page created you can share this with anyone; let’s say Uncle Mike lives in Texas but you live in Vermont. How can Uncle Mike give to his niece or nephew each holiday season or birthday time? Well, Uncle Mike can put a gift of money into his niece or nephews college savings plan by utilizing the GradSave College Savings Registry that you created. I know many elders who would much rather give the gift of savings to a child than the gift of a materialistic item, for that is how they can pass along a future for their younger generation relatives.

College Savings Registry 3

With all that in mind, why not pass along the idea of saving for college by placing $10 coupons in your trick or treat bowl this Halloween? You will be able to educate others on how they can setup their own GradSave College Savings Registry and in turn they will be passing along the idea to their children that saving money is important. I personally wasn’t ever taught to budget money nor save money, but I eventually did learn through trial and error. Would you not rather a child learn through example rather than trial and error?  I think it’s important to teach children to save at a young age so that they learn the concept that money doesn’t grow on trees.

College is an important advancement for your child, whether they go to college for some off he wall career idea or they go for what you had hoped they went for, you must start saving now to be able to afford the ever rising cost of college tuition’s. The younger your child is, the more money you can save. GradSave’s College Savings Registry really makes it easier to save and allow family to donate to the child’s college fund from afar.  This Halloween you can go to GradSave Happy Halloween Page and sign up to register for your child’s registry today or you can simply print off these coupons to hand out to your trick or treaters this season. Not handing out trick or treating items this year? If you are attending any Halloween event you can print off these images and do what I did; place them on cardboard or card stock and hand them out at the event.

Do not simply sign up because I am sharing this information with you; I am sharing this information as a great idea for Halloween hand outs and that I feel strongly about saving for college if you are able to do so. With GradSave College Savings Registry you can essentially take your child’s college fund further by opening doors for far away relatives and friends to easily donate to the fund.

Always Looking to Save, Holiday Season Best Time to Save

It’s the holiday season, we are all about shopping for our family about now, well unless you are like me and wait until the last minute. I have a lot of friends who are already shopping for their families at this time and I am sure they are seeking out ways to save money with hot shopping deals, which is why I am writing this post.

I like to save money all year round. The government is shut down now though and so with that comes consumers wanting to save even more money because they don’t have much choice but to save in any way they can. You can save on holiday gifts, you can save on food shopping and the list goes on and on. I love to save on office supplies, as of lately, I have been using printer ink more often than normal and I love saving on necessary office supplies whenever possible, don’t you?

For my sons who make their own money at their Dads for doing chores, they would be seeking to have a discount video game deals, particularly my seven year old video game nut. There are a lot of discounts on video games from online gaming to video game consoles and even apps. This is great news because my children enjoy not only playing video games on their console game systems but also on cell phones, tablets and computers. While I don’t push high video game usage, it is good to allow your children to have some time on game systems if that’s something that they enjoy.

For me, I need a new office computer and I have found that there are currently a lot of discount computers online for sale. I need specific requirements for working from home for a computer but I also want to find a discount computer for the family area so that the children have a computer that is for their usage only. It’s important to have a computer in the household but to save money on one is even better!

There you have it, things I would like to save money on and find online discounts for; what items would you be seeking out discounts for?
