Working from home is a luxury that more and more of us are beginning to enjoy. The world is becoming more technological by the day, and the ability to allow workers to stay in the comfort of their homes is now a realistic option. However, there are a number of things you need to think about before making that jump to home working. It isn’t as easy as you might think it is, and it takes a certain amount of adjusting to remain productive. Don’t know what I mean? Read on.

  1. Eliminate Distractions

The very worst part about working from home is that there are so many distractions available to you. At a traditional office workplace, you can’t get away with browsing Facebook or go on entertainment websites. You’ll get found out eventually, so you have to avoid it! Unfortunately, no-one is going to yell at you if you do this at home! This can lead to poor work, missed deadlines and much more. Don’t be tempted by distractions!

  1. You’re Still Working!

Just because you have the luxury of rolling out of bed at whatever time you feel like, you need to put things into perspective. Sure, it might not feel like you’re working because of the environment, but you are! You wouldn’t dream of lying around and watching television or getting up ridiculously late for a traditional job. Don’t do the same here.

  1. Professionalism

Following on from the previous point, you need to remember that professionalism is still key. Continue to adhere to the standards that you had set for yourself previously. Shower regularly, remain well groomed, and dress appropriately. Seek out uniform companies and dress for the occasion. That might sound ridiculous, but it’s amazing how much more productive you will be if you treat the situation professionally.

  1. Manage Your Schedule

You’ve got to have the ability to remain disciplined when working from home. We’ve already talked about distractions and the like, but managing your schedule is also important. If you’ve got a set amount of work that needs to be done, you need to plan your day ahead of time. It’s easy to do this when you’re in a traditional workplace, and you’ve got managers to fall back on. At home, it’s much harder to keep track of things. Don’t let time get away from you.

  1. Stay Sociable

One of the things that you’ll probably neglect in the early stages of working from home is how lonely it can get. No longer are you surrounded by colleagues and managers. You might enjoy that fact, but it doesn’t mean that things won’t get tough from time to time. The only way to remedy this is to remain sociable outside of work. Get out there and spend time with friends and family. Otherwise, the mental effects can be a big detriment to both your health and your productivity.

If you’re one of the lucky ones that get to work from home, congratulations! You’ve got plenty of great times ahead, but remember that you’re still at work. Treat it the right way, and you’ll be just fine.

  1. I work from home 3 days a week and these tips are great! I need to eliminate distractions more, especially because it can be so tough to get distracted when trying to work at home.

  2. I’ve found that I still dress up for work, even though I work from home. I shower and shave, wear a nice shirt and slacks. It helps me stay professional, and it makes me feel a lot better about who I am, and what I do.

  3. Distractions are hard to manage when you work from home. I try to carve out time to do things around the house, like chores, but only during breaks.

  4. To be honest, a lot of these are pretty hard to manage when I’m working from my house! Sometimes it helps me to put on some headphones to eliminate all the distractions around me.
