Like so many other parents who do multiple jobs in addition to raising their children I am often asked how do I balance it all. I usually have some brilliant answer combined with how I schedule my day but as I watch my children run in the backyard and write this article a thought passes over me … is there really such a thing as a good balance? Think about it, is life really “balanced”? If it were I think we would never be tested beyond our means, life would lose the risk factor and fun wouldn’t exist. When I think of the word balance I think boring, same day to day routines.
I’m a woman full of many jobs from girlfriend to mother to business owner and blogger. I would love to say that I balance every day so well and things run consistently but reality is life simply flows. What I found happened when I tried to “plan” my day out that the kids would have “other plans”. I have always been a fly by the moment kind of person, so really why wouldn’t my Mom and business life by fly by the moment too?! My day is run by coffee, bagel and water, seriously! I try to eat lunch but usually have only breakfast and dinner. My kids no longer nap, except the rare occasion I get my 2 year old to nap and they are constantly on the run.
On a “normal” day my blogging and work schedule start at night when the kids lay down to sleep and run until about midnight. Justin works nights so it works out great as he gets home in between my work schedule and me working allows him time to eat his dinner, shower and relax a bit before I chat his ear off about the day. Overall I juggle my daily life and never allow myself disappointment should my “mom duties” take over my work hours.
If my kids require attention due to sleep issues, I simply tend to them and get back to work as soon as they are settled into bed. The key to being successful isn’t necessarily a good balance per say its the positive attitude to keep going forward no matter what challenge comes up.
