Did you know that over 80% of childcare centers serving low income families lack age appropriate books? A recent study also showed that the ratio of books per child in middle income neighborhoods is 13 to 1, while low income is 1 age appropriate book per 300 children. It’s a sad truth and the Cheerios family of cereals along with First Book and Jon Scieszka, author of the popular “Trucktown” series and other children’s books, have joined together to deliver 100,000 books to community-based programs serving children in need.
Here is how you can help! Simply visit www.FirstBook.org/Scieszka and test your knowledge with your child and test your combined knowledge of children’s books by answering some trivia questions related to “Trucktown” and other great children’s books.
For every trivia question answered correctly, you can cast one vote for the state you would like to receive books. The five states receiving the most votes will get 20,000 books each, for a total of 100,000 books.
This is such an amazing way to have some educational fun online with your child while helping your state in need get books they so deserve for the children! I have always been an avid book reader and have shared my love of books with my three children. All three of my children love having the books they own, and I couldn’t imagine not being able to read a book to my child due to income restrictions, so please help Cheerios family of cereals along with First Book and Jon Scieszka out and help place age appropriate books into a child’s hand today!

We need so many books. Poverty has gone up and education has gone down.

nc is still the south, and there’s WAY too many illiterate hicks here still
NYS should definitely be in the running for 20,000 books. Many of the schools are inner city schools. The children do not get the resources they need. Teachers don’t get the resources they need. Poverty is all around. I would love to see libraries in the schools and children loving books and learning to read and care for them. Schools in NYC are overcrowded. Classes are overcrowded and materials are scarce. What a wonderful giveaway. I’m rooting for NYS.

I have picked the Florida because it seems like our libraries need more books.
I think New York should get the books since we have such a high poverty rate, and our state wastes so much money on non-necessities. I don’t believe these books should be given to public schools though. I don’t believe, with their high budgets, that they are the neediest for such a donation. These books should be directly handed out to poverty-level, low-income, etc., families/children directly.
I have been amazed at how little reading kids in the poorer neighborhoods here in Ohio do when they are young. Perhaps receiving these books would help them develop a love for reading and improve literacy in the state.
I think our state of California deserves one of these prizes as our schools are overcrowded & our kids could use the extra reading material.
Access to books is important for all children, including the kids in Massachusetts.
My state (Massachusetts) should get the books because we have so many colleges that kids should be inspired to go to, as well as prepared to go to.

I think every state could benefit from free books in this economy, but I voted for Mississippi because they had it rough even in better times — a few books could make a big difference to the kids there
My state, Michigan, has the highest unemployment in the country. We could use books.
I live in TN and children(both rural and urban) are very much in need of books.

My state always give to the poor.
Cities in the US have more people than the whole state of Idaho. We tend to be forgotten.

I vote Kansas. I have visited many libraries in towns where I have lived and have relatives and friends. It is surprising to me how few books many of these libraries have for children.
California
Because government is cutting more & more funding to meet the budget & kids shouldn’t have to suffer for it.
Thanks for the giveaway >^..^<
I selected my home state of NC. While I am extremely proud to live in NC, the educational system leaves a lot to be desired. Basically, it comes down to money. I have several friends who are teachers who have to spend $ out of their own pockets to help the kids get what they need out of class. Thanks!

I vote for Georgia because we are one of the lowest ranked state when it comes to education and the gift of reading could be a start for these kids.
I live in NY, which has the most students of any state–especially here in NYC.
My state deserves the books as much as the next. We all need books for kids. Let’s start keeping our money here inn the USA and let’s take care of our own for awhile. We’re falling too far behind.
New York schools can always use more books. Thanks for this offer.
i don’t think anyone in my state reads
I live in MI. We’re hurting pretty bad right now, schools are closing, people don’t have work, and the weather is just plain cold outside. We could definately use a pick-me-up in the form of some free reading materials for our kids. Thanks for being so generous!

I would love to see Florida receive so many books! Our children here could really use them, since Florida has been hit so very hard by the bad economy. And so many people just think that Florida is made up of retirees and don’t realize how many young families are here!
My state (NJ) needs books because we’ve been in the top 2 for Car Jacking in the U.S. for many years, so more young kids need books to educate themselves and prevent going down the same road.

Massachusetts has a lot of schools and after school programs that could really use new books. We also have a lot of small towns that could of course use a bunch of new books
I’m picking my home state of Kentucky. We are still struggling in terms of education. Comparatively, we have fewer college graduates than most other states. Education is important from an early age. Many students in our rural areas lack resources to get a good start.
well I think my State should be one of the 5 States to get the books because Pennsylvania was one of the original colonies and it a very populous State with many many schools, etc
I think my state should get the 20k in books because our education level stinks. I hear a lot of how bad memphis schools are a lot of it has to do with lack of funding.

You would think the state I live in would have great education and have books available to everyone… Sadly it’s almost the opposite.. The parents have to donate books to the school library and for the classrooms.. Plus being in one of the highest crime rates of the US providing kids of all ages something else to do and learn would be wonderful

Our schools are being hurt so much with budget cuts, Wisconsin would LOVE more books!
MD could really use this to improve the educational system. The entire state is battling with low scores, low funds, and low attendance rates. Things drastically need to be changed.
Honestly, I think all states should receive money for childrens books. There is nothing more exciting than getting children excited about reading and seeing that “light” turn on. Pennsylvania, I’m sure has areas that are underpriveledged and would welcome resources.
NY State school budgets are being cut left and right. We need to be sure our schools can afford necessities – like books.
I think my state of PA could really use it.Due to many budget cuts we are short on books for the schools!

I think AZ should receive the books! They keep cutting our budgets
I would have to say here in Florida we can use all the help we can get.Our libraries and schools are suffering.I know in my county we are living well below the poverty level.
There are many children here in Kansas who don’t have access to books. Thanks for the giveaway!
The guv cut library budgets by 30% and the public needs books.
I have picked our state Michigan. Our unemployment rate is one of the worst in the country.

My state of Ohio has recently made some drastic cuts to our public library system, which I’m seeing has really affected the system in my home city of Columbus, so I think we could get all the help we can get to make sure that our kids continue to have a high level of access to (and a high level of interest in) reading and learning. Thanks!
my town is poor and extra books sure would help in the schools

My state is New York, land of taxes. We have a big budget deficit, so NY keeps inventing new ways to get money. Our school taxes are exhorbitant; usually we get a ‘rebate’ on them -not this year. The state is cutting its funding for schools and libraries. Next year we have to pay $25 for new license plates for the car. They sock it to us every way they can. Anyway my library is small, but had the 3rd largest number of visits. While our town taxes help pay for the library, with the state taking money away from it, they need all the help they can get.
Please think of NY state when you distribute the books, and remember there IS a lot of NY that is NOT NYC, so don’t forget them!
Thanks for the giveaway!
California. My state.

Our state is way behind on reading and education in general. We need help!
I think Arizona should be one of the states picked as we have large reservations in our state and also many rural under-served areas. Books would make such a difference in these children’s lives!
