Last night I took some time to take a walk with my daughter. The routine is, she gets home from school and has a snack then does homework. Last night I decided to see if she would by chance want to take a walk and enjoy the nice Fall day with her Mama. She of course was torn between playing with her new Crayola crayons or walking with Mom. Finally she agreed if I would take her to the library during our walk, she’s had her own library card since age 4 (we know the children’s library, a long time family friend and my old babysitter from when I was a little girl). While she was all in the car ready to go, I decided to be silly and start pretending like I was going to push the car down town to park and take our walk (we live on a busy main highway) so … this is what happened afterwards…
So anyways … after we were done playing … we took a nice walk together! The walk was nice other than the fact that my now 7 year old seems to think she is 13 and able to just walk off on her own whenever and wherever she seems fit. I am a bit over protective in that I make sure my children are walking within a foot of me or so. I like them to be within a hop or a skip away from me at all times, especially when out in a busy store or in a place that they could easily just disappear on me. (must come from having AJ who is so hyper I don’t want him further than a hand away from me)
I admire that Ki is very independent, truly I do, and she enjoys having the space to feel like she is a big girl, but I tell you this independent nature has gone from listening to me when I tell her to stop because she is drifting to far away to ignoring me and smirking as she inches herself further away from me. This is a new thing for Ki, not listening to her Mom, in the past she had been so well behaved and listened to everything I said. She took a time out without screaming or crying and now she hits, punches, and kicks me sometimes when she has to get in trouble for something.
Other than the independent nature of my daughter, our walk went rather well and we took out two books from the library … two E.B. White’s books, Charlottes Web and Stuart Little. We are looking forward to reading these books this weekend!
Make it a Happy Day!
