Using Twitter For Business
July 6th, 2009 · 9 Comments
Twitter is a fast growing social networking, micro-blogging site where users simply answer the question, “What are you doing?”. The answer must be no larger than 140 characters. This may sound like a small amount of characters for a person who is attempting to market their brand or product. Personally, I beg to differ. Twitter’s limit of how many characters a user may type, keeps marketing short, simple and to the point.
Social media has become a big way to get your brand or product noticed fast. In March 2008, Twitter had 1+ million users, 200,000 active users each week and there were over 3 million twitter messages per day. {based on numbers taken from multiple Internet sources and averaged} These numbers are astounding, but show you how important social networking is today.
Using a site like Twitter to network allows your target audience to get to know you. How do you find your target audience? With tools like Twellow and Wefollow you can get your brand out there to who you want to see most. Simply enter a keyword and voila you have a list of people you should be following.
The best approach to marketing your brand on Twitter is to keep links at a minimum. The profile you set up on Twitter will have the link to your website, and if you have something you really want to share go ahead and post the link on your updates. Many followers enjoy connecting with you and getting to know who the real you is. You can chat about your day, what project you are currently working on or a new product that is coming out. A great way to market without putting links out to your follows all day long, is to update Twitter every time you are doing something new.
Every time you update your blog, website, product line, sell a product, or other similar situation you can update your Twitter account. This shows users that you are in high demand and they will soon get in contact with you to ask more questions. This approach is a nonchalant, non-sales pitch approach to gaining new customers, clients and friends.

Great post! I’ve been trying to explain how Twitter can help people in business, but they just aren’t getting it. I finally told a guy, “It’s like you’re in a bar watching a football game, bonding over your fanship for the same team. When the game is over, you could exchange biz info. You may or may not become customer/client, but that relationship has begun over a conversation.”

I already use twitter to update when I make a blog post using one of the wordpress plugins. I, however, am upset with the pure amount of spam and advertisements due to the implementation of pay-per-tweet programs.
